Darling Olivia :: Thompsons Station Newborn Photography

Olivia is the darling four-week old little sister to the most adorable two-and-a-half year old Jackson, the two of them together making up the bulk of what keeps their parents, Bethany and Heath busy. But I’m sure it’s the best kind of busy. And how gracious that God would bring such a sweet and peaceful baby girl into their mix just over four weeks ago on May 27.

I think it is often startling to parents watching their newborns change so quickly before their eyes. To see, even in four weeks, a just-born 8lb, 11oz baby waking up everyday a little bit bigger, a little bit more aware, a little bit more and more the child that will one day be two-and-a-half, and then five, and then ten. Time moves so quickly.

This kind of session is the reason I choose to steer my work away from the time-window box. Why I, when working with the parents of infants and children, ask them to allow me to spend, at the least, a couple of hours with them. A couple of non-frenzied, enjoyable hours where I fit my work to the schedule and nature of the life of that family and take it all in. Every beautiful, sometimes crazy, and wonderfully intoxicating moment that makes the camera seem not a tool but a window. A window they will always have to look back into, no matter how quickly time continues to move forward.

I am guaranteed to walk away from moments like this feeling more at rest, more at peace, and more stirred than I know what to do with sometimes. Especially watching the gracefulness and peace Bethany exudes as a mother and knowing Heath as such a strong, supportive father and leader of their family. It makes me look forward to our own journey. Our own unique make-up that will be the fabric of the family we’ll hopefully begin one day.

I’m grateful to have been a part of capturing their own story in the present.
